The Plateau House of Assembly has invited the management of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) to appear before it over the rampant cases of transformer vandalism.

The resolution was made during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by the speaker, Moses Sule.

The attention of the legislators was drawn through a motion of urgent public importance raised by the majority leader, Ishaku Maren (PDP – Bokkos Constituency).

He said over 83 transformers had been vandalised across the state, throwing some communities into darkness for about six months.

Mr Maren described light as one of the fundamental basic social amenities that humanity cannot do without in the current generation.

“There seems to be a conspiracy theory that JEDC has a hand in the problem because their installations cannot be stolen by persons or persons without technical knowledge.

“Mr Speaker, we need to invite the management of JEDC to come to tell us why this is going on at such a scale without any meaningful efforts to stop the trend.

“It is a private business, but they have taken adequate measures to protect their facilities,” he said.

After contributions from members, the speaker directed the house clerk to invite the company’s management to appear before the lawmakers to brief them.

Also, during the plenary, Plateau State Citizens Mediation Bill and Other Related Matters 2023 passed the third reading.

The bill seeks to enhance mediation among state citizens to reduce dependence on traditional courts.

Deputy Speaker Gwottson Fom, who chaired the committee for a public hearing on the bill, said the mediators’ role would be to guide the parties towards their resolution.
