The Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 27-year-old man, Raymond Friday, in a correctional facility for alleged unlawful possession of a firearm.

The police charged the defendant, a resident of Barnawa, Kaduna, with illegal possession of a firearm.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel did not take the defendant’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction.

Mr Emmanuel directed the police to return the case file to the Kaduna directorate of public prosecution.

He adjourned the case until March 5 for mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Chidi Leo, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 29 at about 10:30 p.m. at Barnawa.

Leo said that the team, acting on an intelligence report, arrested the defendant during a search in his residence and recovered a locally made pistol and three live cartridges.

He said the defendants could not satisfactorily explain how he obtained the weapon.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
