The Police on Thursday brought a carpenter, Abubakar Isa, before a Kado Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing a mobile phone worth N90,000.

The police charged Isa, 28, of Jabi Daki, Abuja, with joint act and theft.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecution counsel, Stanley Nwafoaku, told the court that on May 17, at about 9.00 p.m., Mr John Taha of Jiwa, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Station.

Mr Nwafoaku alleged that the defendant and five others now at large attacked the complainant and snatched his Infinix mobile phone valued at N90,000 while on his way to church at Jabi, Abuja.

He said that the defendant was arrested in the course of a police search and various stimulants such as Indian Hemp were found in his possession. He, however, said his accomplices were yet to be arrested.

The prosecution counsel said during police investigation, the defendant admitted to the alleged crime, saying the offence contravenes the provision of sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.

The judge, Muhammed Wakili admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 and one surety in like sum.

Mr Wakili ordered that the surety must provide a BVN printout, a recent passport photograph and a valid identification card, which must be verified by the court registrar.

The judge adjourned the matter until July 10 for hearing.
