Police arraign Lagosian for stealing groundnut oil

The police on Wednesday arraigned a 28-year-old commercial cyclist, Muhammed Garuba, in a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for stealing five litres of groundnuts worth N18,000.
Mr Garuba is charged with theft and breach of peace.
The prosecution counsel, Friday Maneh, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Tuesday, at about 11:30 a.m., at the Badagry Market, Lagos.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant stole the container of groundnut oil, belonging to Dorcas Mobee, the complainant.
He said the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by creating pandemonium.
Mr Maneh said the defendant intended to use the stolen groundnut oil to cook for a party for his newborn baby on Friday.
“He went to the market, stole the oil and ran away. He was caught by the people and handed over to police for prosecution,” Mr Maneh said.
The chief magistrate, A. J. Aina, admitted the defendant to bail of N150,000 with two sureties in the like sum on count two.
Mr Aina adjourned the case until April 27 for facts and sentences on count one.
