The police command in Enugu State has announced the arrest of four suspected members of a car-stealing syndicate in the state.

A statement on Monday by the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said four vehicles were stolen within Enugu, and a bunch of car keys were recovered from them.

Mr Ndukwe said the suspects were arrested by a police operative in the Uwani Police Division following surveillance mounted around the Kenyatta Market axis, where several reports of car thefts were received.

“Accordingly, Anioko Chukwujekwu, 32, the syndicate’s kingpin, was arrested on March 3, 2024, at about noon while attempting to steal a car from where it was parked at Kenyatta Market.

“During the preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to the crime, while his confessional statements led to further arrest of three more suspects in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, who are his conspirators, receivers and sellers of the stolen vehicles,” he added.

He said the recovered Mercedes-Benz cars were registered SKA 292 AA, AGL 512 EY, and CHR 50 AE.

The command spokesman said the suspects would be arraigned in court and prosecuted once investigations are concluded.

He urged residents to continue to be law-abiding and security-conscious and report suspected criminals directly to the police or through 08086671202 and 08098880102.
