The police command in the FCT has detained a cop over an accidental discharge that led to the death of an Abuja resident, Oyebuchi Anene.

The FCT command spokesman, SP Josephine Adeh, said this in a statement on Friday.

Ms Adeh said the tragic and unprecedented incident happened in Byazhin area of Abuja on Wednesday at about 9:45 p.m.

She said the police commissioner in charge of the FCT, Benneth Igweh, had ordered an investigation into the incident.

Ms Adeh said the commissioner directed the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to commence an immediate and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

She said the commissioner expressed condolences to the bereaved family and the public.

Ms Adeh said the commissioner condemned the unprofessional and disheartening conduct of the police officer while he assured the family and the public of swift justice.
