Police nab fake mechanic in Benue, recover stolen motorcycle
Operatives of the Awkunanaw Division of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested one Musa Abdullahi for fraudulently stealing and escaping with a dispatch rider’s motorcycle.
The state’s Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday shared on the command’s official X handle on Saturday.
The statement indicated that the police arrested the 22-year-old suspect around 5:30pm on Monday in the Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Mr Ndukwe said the police recovered a logistics company’s Daylong Motorcycle, which he fraudulently stole from its rider (name withheld) at One-Day, Agbani Road, Enugu, at about 3pm.
The state’s police spokesperson said, “The suspect’s arrest follows the receipt of a report from the rider alleging how the suspect unsuspectingly made away with the motorcycle under the pretence of being a mechanic and could fix the motorbike, which broke down at the mentioned location in Enugu.
“A preliminary investigation shows that the suspect, after presenting himself as a mechanic who could fix the motorcycle, asked the rider to go to the distant New Artisan, Enugu, to buy a sprocket, which he said was responsible for the breakdown of the motorbike. The rider complied but came back to meet the absence of the suspect, who had made away with the motorbike to faraway Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State, where he was arrested by the operatives.’’
He urged the public, particularly motorists, to be wary of who they allow to assist them in such a manner to avoid falling prey to such criminals.
