Daily power generation has dropped by 630 megawatts after a fire outbreak incident at Egbin Power Plant in Ikorodu, Lagos state.

Management of the Egbin Power had in a statement reported of a fire outbreak at its power plant at about 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, reports ThisDay.

The power plant management disclosed that its fire fighters, in collaboration with firefighters from the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) in Egbin successfully contained the fire.

“Egbin has since activated its emergency response mechanism to determine the cause of the incident, while operations at the plant have been temporarily suspended in line with the plant’s safety procedures.

“Egbin is also working with the Federal Fire Service, the Federal Ministry of Power and other stakeholders to review the incident,” the organisation added.

Speaking on the outbreak, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) spokesperson, Ndidi Mba, said the incident  led to the removal of 630MW from the national grid.

She explained that the 630MW was shutdown to protect other unaffected units of the grid.
“We know that there was a fire outbreak and the total generation of 630MW was removed from the grid because of that,” Ms Mba told ThisDay newspaper.

“You know, when a fire outbreak happens, even if it doesn’t affect the entire units, the tendency is that, to protect the other ones, you shut them down. So, as I said, 630mw was removed from the grid on that day (Wednesday),” she added.

Recall that the TCN had earlier adopted a load reduction mechanism to prevent system collapse.
However, the mechanism coupled with frequent grid collapse and the fire incident has continued to worsen the power supply situation in Lagos state.
