PSG defender Achraf Hakimi charged with rape in France
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi has been charged with rape of an unnamed woman, the the prosecutor’s department of Nanterre confirmed to ESPN on Friday.
The story first emanated from the media last week, confirming that an unnamed 23-year-old woman had gone to police in France to allege rape by the football star.
It was reported that a preliminary investigation was opened last week even though the woman opted not to press charges against Hakimi. The prosecutor’s office, however, decided to open an investigation due to the overwhelming evidence presented by the alleged victim.
The former Real Madrid player has so far been placed under close police surveillance and was also banned from making any form of contact with the victim.
Hakimi is yet to make any comments about the latest developments but his lawyer, Fanni Colin, said he is ready to prove his client’s innocence and will cooperate fully with the investigation.
Also, PSG are yet to release a statement but before the Friday’s update on the case, ESPN reported that the 24-year-old was in contention to face Nantes in their next league match against on Saturday.
