Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has drawn parallels between the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria and  the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine due to Russia’s invasion.

“The horrific scenes in #Ukraine of the dead and destruction are a stark reminder of the inhumanity that we see here at home. This evil here and around the world must end, and those responsible must be held accountable,” Mr Atiku tweeted on Wednesday.

Mr Atiku’s comments come as Nigeria’s security forces continue to suffer losses at the hands of bandits rampaging across the country.

Kaduna has become the major point of attacks by insurgent units in recent weeks.

On Monday, Peoples Gazette reported about 17 soldiers killed after bandits overwhelmed a forward operating base of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna State.

In late March, the airport in Kaduna and two passenger trains heading to Kaduna from Abuja had been attacked by armed gangs. The bandits successfully attacked a train bearing over 1,000 passengers. Many people have confirmed killed, injured or abducted.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, described the ongoing tussle between the insurgents and the Nigerian government as asymmetrical warfare.
