Portugal and Brazil have progressed to the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup after both nations recorded victories in their penultimate games of their respective groups on Monday.

Haven both won the opening fixtures of their respective groups, wins for 2016 European champions Portugal against the inaugural World Cup winners Uruguay and five-time winners Brazil over Switzerland confirmed their spots in the round of 16.

Manchester United duo of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro netted the winners in both important fixtures.

Fernandes found the back of the net from a curler in the 54th minute. The goal was initially awarded for Cristiano Ronaldo after it seemed that the ball flipped his head but was later ruled as the former’s goal.

Just before the full time whistle, Fernandes scored from a penalty kick to seal an impressive Group H 2-nil victory for Portugal against Uruguay.

Meanwhile, Casemiro scored an 83rd minute stunner to give the Samba Boys a 1-0 win over Switzerland in the Group G fixture at the Stadium 974.

Uruguay must now beat Ghana in their last game of the group stage and hope Portugal avoid a defeat against South Korea.

Switzerland on the other hand will look forward to at least a draw against Serbia in the last game of the group and less than a win for Cameroon against Brazil.
