The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is set to start earlier than planned, with the hosts Qatar playing Ecuador on Sunday, November 20.

The fixture was initially scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (GMT) on Monday, with Senegal vs the Netherlands being the tournament’s opening game earlier on the same day, at 10:00 a.m. (GMT).

Based on a request submitted by the South American Confederation (CONMEBOL), the administrative arm of FIFA submitted a proposal to move the game after discussions with Qatar and Ecuador.

If approved by the Bureau of the FIFA council, the fixture will continue a World Cup tradition that has seen the opening game feature at least one of the host or the defending champion.
