The Qatar Charity Organisation is to sponsor the education of 1,000 orphans in Borno.

The ambassador of the State of Qatar to Nigeria, Ali-bin Ghanem Al-Hajri, made this known on Thursday in Maiduguri during a courtesy visit to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno.

Mr Al-Hajri reiterated the Qatari government’s commitment to enhancing relations with Nigeria. He added that Borno, which occupied a historical place in Islamic history, would be supported as it recovered from the insurgency.

In his response, Mr Zulum thanked Qatar for supporting the state, recalling that the country supplied food items for displaced persons two months ago.

Mr Zulum said the multi-million naira project to be executed by Qatar in Borno this year was timely as the state recovers from 15 years of insurgency that led to the death of over 300,000 people and displaced 3.5 million others.

He assured Qatar of the state government’s commitment to the successful execution of humanitarian projects that would bring succour to the people.

While in Maiduguri, the ambassador performed the ground-breaking ceremony for a school for orphans and presented a lecture at the Nigeria Arabic Language Village, Ngala.
