Rachel Zegler’s remarks on Disney’s ‘Snow White’ remake stir controversy

Rachel Zegler, the lead actress in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of the 1937 classic ‘Snow White,’ has sparked a series of contentious remarks regarding the movie, raising uncertainties about its release.

These remarks hint at potential variations, including racial adjustments to the original story, which have drawn criticism and sparked unwelcome discussions.

In 2021, Disney faced criticism upon announcing the casting of 22-year-old Latina actress Zegler, whose background differs from the original German princess traditionally portrayed as “fair.”

Responding to this, Zegler received racial abuse on her X handle in a now-deleted tweet, where she firmly stated, “Yes, I am Snow White. No, I am not bleaching my skin for the role.”

The film has not only faced backlash due to Zegler’s comments but also due to its renaming from ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ to simply ‘Snow White,’ which has triggered diverse reactions from fans.

As per reports from Daily Mail UK, the live-action remake might replace the seven dwarfs with magical creatures.

Numerous interviews with Zegler, circulating online, indicate her inclination towards a distinct plot that diverges from the conventional fairytale love story that characterised the original classic.

She expressed her view on the prince character played by Andrew Burnap in the remake, deeming his actions as ‘weird’ and labelling him as a ‘stalker.’

Referring to the 1937 cartoon, she mentioned, “There’s a significant focus on her love story with the guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird. So we didn’t do that this time.”

She expanded on this perspective during an interview with Extra TV, emphasising that the movie follows a unique path despite common assumptions about a romantic narrative due to the casting of a male character.

She shared, “It’s one of those things that I think everyone will speculate about, but it’s not primarily about the love story. It’s truly wonderful.”

Further, in an interview with Variety, Zegler reinforced her stance alongside co-actress Gal Gadot, who portrayed the Evil Queen. Zegler echoed her earlier sentiment that the princess does not rely on the prince for salvation.

“She dreams of becoming the leader her late father encouraged her to be — fearless, fair, brave, and true,” she said.

Much like Disney’s previous remakes such as ‘The Lion King,’ ‘Aladdin,’ ‘Cinderella,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and ‘The Little Mermaid,’ the new rendition of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ invites scepticism regarding Disney’s creative direction.

Directed by Marc Webb and produced by Marc Platt, ‘Snow White’ is scheduled for its premiere on March 22nd, 2024, in the United States.
