Governor Babagana Zulum on Wednesday met with heads of security agencies and other stakeholders over rising gangsterism in Maiduguri and its environs.

Addressing journalists after the security meeting, Mr Zulum observed that the gangs, who hitherto engaged in handsets snatching, had graduated to robbery and killings.

“These syndicates who specialised in handsets snatching, daylight robbery using locally made weapons have graduated to killings,” stated the Borno governor.

Mr Zulum said the youths not only kill themselves in gang fights but also attack security personnel and members of the public. He cited the recent killing of a police officer and an unidentified man by gangs almost in the same area, adding that the government will not allow such acts to continue.

“The state government under my leadership will not allow such matter to deteriorate. Security agencies are tasked to come up with recommendations and far-reaching decisions to curtail such activities within Maiduguri and environs,” Mr Zulum said.
