Russia and China vetoed the United States proposed resolution at a temporary ceasefire in all parts of Gaza. The truce which called for an “immediate and sustained cease-fire” hoped to advance negotiations on the hostages and ultimately allow humanitarian aid to enter parts of the strip which now faced severe hunger and starvation.

It failed on Friday after Russia and China vetoed the resolution with Moscow saying the resolution was a “hypocritical spectacle” that puts no pressure on Israel to end its widely condemned cruel offensive on the strip.

Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzya said that Washington’s resolution was extremely politicised, saying it was no call for a cease-fire and that the U.S. sought to “deliberately mislead the international community.”

Mr Nebenzya said the resolutions gave an effective greenlight to Israel’s planned offensive in Rafah, Gaza’s Southern area which currently houses more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians.

Zhang Jun, representing China, said that the proposed truce employed an “ambiguous language” that dodged the most central issue, that of a cease-fire.”

“Nor does it even provide an answer to the question of realising a ceasefire in the short term,” he added

The draft had suggested the “imperative” for “an immediate and sustained ceasefire to protect civilians on all sides.”

President Emmanuel Macron of France has said the rejection of the resolution will make France proceed with proposing its own draft.

“Following Russia’s and China’s veto a few minutes ago, we are going to resume work on the basis of the French draft resolution in the Security Council and work with our American, European and Arab partners to reach an agreement,” Mr Macron said at the end of a European Union leaders summit in Brussels
