Ukrainian authorities have said a large quantity of grain was destroyed in a Russian attack in eastern Ukraine.

A fire broke out in the affected warehouse in the city of Zelenodolsk, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, Valentyn Resnichenko, wrote on Telegram on Thursday.

Forty tonnes of grain were apparently destroyed. The governor blamed Russia for the fire, although this information could not be independently verified.

Besides Russia, Ukraine is an important supplier of grain and fertiliser for many poorer countries, especially in Africa.

But there has been a blockade on grain leaving Ukrainian ports for much of the conflict.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, a ship with 7,000 tonnes of grain has left the port at Berdyansk after waiting there for several months.

The destination of the cargo is not disclosed.
