Salvadoran immigrant wrongfully deported from U.S. faces new threat of expulsion to Uganda

Mr Garcia’s notice of removal revealed that he could be deported to Uganda as soon as Wednesday unless his lawyer approaches the court for “withholding of removal”.

Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran immigrant at the centre of a widely publicised wrongful deportation case against the Donald Trump administration, has been detained again ahead of a potential expulsion to Uganda.

Mr Garcia’s case first became a headline in March when immigration authorities mistakenly deported him to a prison camp in El Salvador, which resulted in a longstanding legal battle between him and the Trump administration, with the Supreme Court ultimately ruling that he should be returned to the United States.

According to The New York Times, Mr Garcia was detained by authorities on Monday upon his arrival at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Baltimore, with his lawyer Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, stating that he faces possible deportation to Uganda as part of the deal between the African nation and the White House to house deportees from third countries.

Mr Garcia’s notice of removal revealed that he could be deported to Uganda as soon as Wednesday unless his lawyer approaches the court for “withholding of removal” and provides evidence on why they believe his life would be in imminent danger in the African nation, NBC reported.

The latest move by the Trump administration came barely three days after he was released from jail in Tennessee, where he had been detained since his return to the United States in June over allegations of human and drug trafficking, which he repeatedly denied.

He has since been presented with a deal bargain by the Department of Justice to plead guilty to the federal smuggling charges against him, serve time, and then be deported to Costa Rica, but he refused the offer.
