The wives of Lagos and Osun States, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Ngozi Adeleke, presented gifts to babies born at the dawn of the New Year in their respective states on Sunday.

At the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Mrs Sanwo-Olu welcomed triplets delivered via Caesarean section by Mrs Olufoye.

The triplets were a girl weighing 2.2 kilograms born at 12:07 a.m.; the second child, a boy weighing two kilograms was delivered at 12:08 a.m. while the third child, a girl born at 12:09 a.m. weighed 2.1 kilograms.

At the Eti-Osa Maternal Child Centre (MCC), a boy who weighed 3.1 kilograms delivered at 12:01 a.m. by Mrs Ayinde was the first baby of the year.

While baby Iromain, a girl who weighed 2.9 kilograms delivered at 12:02 a.m. was the first baby of the year at Ebute-Metta General Hospital.

Welcoming the first babies at these hospitals, Mrs Sanwo-Olu said babies are priceless gifts and their birth brings good fortune to society.

She noted that the state through the health ministry had strengthened its maternal and child health policies and programmes to reduce maternal, child and infant mortality.

She added that upgrading and constructing new Maternal and Child Care (MCC) centres was to provide accessible and affordable mother and child services to reduce the high morbidity and mortality among women and under-five children in the state.

Sanwo-Olu praised the healthcare workers and hospital management for positive attitudinal change and provision of conducive and serene environment for effective service delivery.

She also commended all philanthropists, corporate bodies, non-governmental organisations and civil society groups that partnered to complement the vision and efforts of the state in the health sector.

In Osun, Mrs Adeleke presented gifts to the state’s first baby of the year, delivered at the State General Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo.

Mrs Adeleke, who was represented by her media aide, Adenike Adeleke, said she was passionate about the welfare of children, stating that she presented the gifts to encourage and support the parents.

She admonished parents to take good care of their children, adding that the administration, under her husband, was for the betterment of the people of the state, especially children.

She assured of more goodies for children as the government settled down to the business of governance.

Bosede Temilde, Assistant Chief Nursing Officer in the hospital, said the baby (a boy) was delivered at about 4:03 a.m on Sunday.

Ms Temilade also disclosed that the baby was delivered through caesarean section after self-delivery by the mother became difficult.

She said the baby weighed 3.7kg at birth and that both the baby and the mother were in good health.

Kikelomo Olayinka, the mother of the baby, while appreciating the governor’s wife, thanked her for the gesture and God for seeing her through the delivery.

Mrs Olayinka promised to reciprocate Adeleke’s gesture by adding one of the names of the Governor’s wife to that of her son during his christening.

Some of the gifts presented to the baby included diapers, soaps, cloths and N100,000 cash
