A 32-year-old scavenger, Isah Yusuf, was on Wednesday docked in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly snatching a woman’s handbag.

The defendant lives in Malali Abakpa, Kaduna, and is charged with one count of theft.

The prosecution counsel, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 3 in the Malali area of Kaduna.

According to Leo, the defendant acted dubiously and snatched a handbag belonging to Rabi Dogo while she was waiting to board a bus home.

He said the handbag contained a Samsung phone worth N246,000, cash of N37,000 and a power bank valued at N20,000.

The prosecutor added that the defendant was caught and handed over to the police when the complainant raised an alarm.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel admitted the defendant to N100,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Mr Emmanuel said the surety must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Kaduna government.

He adjourned the case until March 5 for a hearing.
