A 28-year-old scavenger, Adamu Suleiman, appeared before a Kaduna chief magistrates’ court on Wednesday for allegedly stealing 12 plastic chairs worth N180,000.

Mr Suleiman, whose residential address was not provided, is charged with theft.

The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 13, at 4:20 a.m., along Kano Road, Kaduna.

Mr Leo said a vigilante group caught the defendant stealing chairs from a shop belonging to the complainant, Bello Maigari.

He said the offence contravened section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mr Emmanuel said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna government.

He adjourned the case until August 17 for a hearing.
