Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Ahmed Wadada (SDP-Nasarawa) has called for the establishment of a development commission to cater for catchment areas surrounding the Federal Capital Territory.

He made the call on Thursday while delivering his goodwill message at the inauguration of a five-kilometre road linking Luve and Masaka in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Mr Wadada revealed his plan to begin the process of getting a law passed by the National Assembly to that effect.

He recalled that in the past he made an attempt towards enacting a law through the National Assembly for the establishment of the commission.

He said he could not succeed at the time, saying that this time round, “I’m more determined to ensure the realisation of the commission. I will leverage the privilege given to me by the mandate of my people to say that during my sojourn at the National Assembly, I made an attempt which could not sail through.

“But I am again going to revisit it with the support of my colleagues, to come from the angle of the law that a commission should be established to be known as the Federal Capital Territory Areas Development Commission.

“The proposed commission will seek to create a common coffer that will seek from source the states contributing to the coffers as well as the Federal Government also contributing.

He said such the coffer would be utilised by taking care of the socio-economic problems of communities near the FCT like Karu and others.

Mr Wadada advised those representing the people or occupying leadership positions to correct the ills of the past for a better tomorrow.

He used the opportunity to praise the effort of Vice President Kashim Shettima, for providing the needed infrastructure for the people of Borno State when he governed the state from 2007 to 2011.

He added that it was because of his good works for humanity that God had now elevated him to the position of vice president of Nigeria.

Similarly, Mr Wadada commended Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa for adding value to the people of the state.

He stated, “Of course, it is the responsibility of every leader to make life better for his people and so we commend and congratulate Governor Sule for being responsible by providing such a road for his people because that is what it implies to be a leader.”
