Senior advocate tells Atiku, Obi supporters to be patient with ‘infallible’ judges

Mba Ukweni, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has called on Nigerians to refrain from demonising the judiciary.

Mr Ukweni made the call during in interview on Thursday in Calabar.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar (of PDP) and Peter Obi (of Labour Party) and their supporters have railed against the judicial system following the affirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s victory at the February 25 presidential election. They accused judges of underhanded tactics and corruption.

Reacting to the judgment of the presidential election petitions tribunal delivered in Abuja on Seppber 6,

the legal practitioner said the tribunal judges gave their judgment and made their positions based on the evidence placed before them and the law.

The senior advocate noted that there is an avenue for disgruntled parties to approach the Supreme Court.

“I don’t like a situation where the judiciary is castigated to the point of intimidation due to their work. The judiciary has had a lot of rough times in this country,” said Mr Ukweni. “Their has been the issue of undue interference with the judiciary, an arm of government that is supposed to be independent from the other arms and dispassionate.”

He added, “Judges are not infallible. It is only God who is. So, the public should be a little patient with the judiciary.”

Mr Ukweni also mentioned that Nigeria needs strong institutions.
