Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has been released from jail after perfecting the term of his bail conditions, Peoples Gazette can confirm.

Seun has been in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force since last week over an alleged assault on a police officer.

“Nevertheless, the release of Mr. Kuti on bail, as ordered by the Magistrate, is only waiting for administrative approval. That process has nothing to do with whether or not the court has a physical sitting,” Seun’s legal team said earlier on Tuesday.

The musician’s lawyer Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN) confirmed Seun was released around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. In a social media video from the moment he was released, the Grammy-nominated singer can be seen hugging some individuals who were waiting for the moment.

Seun was on May 13 charged with assaulting a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos and had since been held at the State Criminal Investigation Department popularly known as Panti located in Yaba, Lagos.

Following his arraignment at a Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba last week, the singer was granted a bail by the presiding magistrate Adeola Olatubosun. However, she gave the police permission to hold Seun for a two-day period for conclusion of investigations.

On approach by the police, an additional four-day permission which elapsed today was granted by Ms Olatubosun for the conclusion of investigation.

The magistrate also ordered the police to transmit to hothe Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) for prosecution.

Hearing was scheduled to continue on Tuesday but proceedings could not hold due to Chief Magistrate Olatubosun’s absence. He was reported to had been away attending a training course.

Subsequently, the case was adjourned to Wednesday for the continuation of proceedings and Seun, the son of the pioneer of Afrobeat Fela Kuti, is expected to make an appearance at the court tomorrow.
