Political parties and candidates participating in Saturday’s election reruns in Sokoto signed a peace pact on Thursday.

In a speech at the event, organised by the Sokoto police command, police commissioner Kaigama urged the gladiators in the rerun to shun actions capable of igniting unrest before, during and after the elections.

He said that operatives had been fully deployed to enforce law and order and warned politicians against spreading rumours, especially on the outcomes of the elections.

He said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the only body allowed by law to declare and announce the results and urged people to play by the rules of the game.

Mr Kaigama cautioned the social media handlers to avoid spreading rumours, saying that the command had put machinery in place to ensure a peaceful election.

INEC’s administrative secretary in Sokoto, Hauwa Kangiwa, said adequate arrangements had been made for the election reruns.

Kangiwa said that materials and manpower for areas earmarked for the exercise had been organised and urged political actors to remain supportive by ensuring compliance with electoral regulations.

In separate remarks, PDP and APC chairmen Muhammad Goronyo and Isa Achida promised to maintain peace and adhere to the electoral guidelines.

The elections would be conducted in 46 polling units across the Yabo/Shagari federal constituency, Bodinga and Tambuwal LGAs for the House of Assembly.
