The National Youth Service Corps has extended the service period of three members who served in Sokoto for absconding and misconduct.

The NYSC coordinator in Sokoto, Usman Yakubu-Yaro, disclosed this while issuing certificates to the 2023 Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 youth corps members on Thursday.

Mr Yakubu-Yaro said the NYSC has zero tolerance for truancy and would not hesitate to punish erring youth corps members.

He added that out of 618 youth corps members who completed the one-year mandatory service, 351 were males, while 267 were females who displayed commendable character during the year.

He added that both males and females have been shortlisted for the Sultan of Sokoto Meritorious Award for their outstanding contributions to the development of the state during the service year.

The coordinator, who said the scheme posted a high number of youth corps members to schools to teach and medical personnel to rural areas, stressed that those are areas where they are mostly needed.

He urged the outgoing youth corps members to be good ambassadors of the scheme wherever they found themselves and advised them to utilise the skills acquired during the service year, stressing that white-collar jobs are difficult to find.
