The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support project in Sokoto State has pledged to enhance activities of livestock value-chain operators in the state.

The Project Coordinator in the state, Sirajo Abubakar, made the commitment during a livestock industry stakeholders’ meeting in Sokoto on Sunday.

Mr Abubakar stated that the commitment encompassed leaders of associations involved in livestock production, processing, and marketing in the state.

“This unique project is designed to provide technical support and assistance to all categories of livestock producers across Sokoto State.

“It encompasses Fulani herders, household livestock keepers, farm owners, processors such as butchers, hides and skin merchants. Others are yoghurt producers and more, with a specific focus on small and medium-scale businesses,” he said.

The coordinator reiterated that the project’s goal was to establish market linkages that would enhance the commercialisation of livestock and livestock products.

Mr Abubakar explained that the primary objective of the intervention was to introduce technology to boost livestock production, enhance value addition, and promote commercialisation and potentially facilitating exports.

Also, the state L-PRES Livestock Value Chain Officer, Umar Madawaki, highlighted the significance of the interaction, especially given the high demand for livestock products in the state.

The project’s Monitoring Officer, Khalid Sarki, introduced the participants to a new beneficiary mapping tool.

According to Mr Sarki, the tool is a mobile application that can be installed on Android phones to register and submit beneficiary information to a backend data server for future reference.

He said that the tool was designed to prevent the inclusion of fictitious members by certain associations.

On his part, Chairman of the Leather Value Chain in the state and one of the participants, Mallam Murtala Isah, encouraged other leaders to collaborate with L-PRES on the significant and unique initiative.

He viewed the project as a valuable opportunity to promote livestock production and the livestock product business.
