Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) has denounced the attack on supporters of his political rival, Peter Obi, in Lagos on Saturday.

“I wholeheartedly condemn attacks on @NgLabour party supporters on their way to their Lagos rally by usual suspects,” the presidential contender wrote in a tweet. “This act of violence is unacceptable and would only bring more troubles to those merchants of violence.”

Mr Obi’s supporters were attacked on their way to the Labour Party campaign rally at TBS on Saturday by thugs suspected to be loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Mr Sowore said that every Nigerian citizen should be free to exercise the right to choose their preferred candidate without fear of retribution.

“Every Nigerian must be accorded their right to choose the candidate that best represent their aspiration(s).”

The AAC presidential candidate urged law enforcement agencies to carry out their responsibilities diligently by ensuring citizens are protected from political miscreants “at all times.”

“Most importantly law enforcement agencies owe these Nigerians a duty of care at all times. The assailants must be fished out  and punished. #WeCantContinueLikeThis,” added Mr Sowore.

The Lagos state Police Command says the attack is being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department and plans to apprehend those responsible.
