A yet-to-be-identified widow reportedly collapsed due to hunger while walking with her three children in a market in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a viral video by a blog, Instablog, on Friday, the widow who appeared weak on the bare floor by the roadside had no strength to speak as sympathisers gathered.

According to the traders in the video, the widow who came with her three children from Amuloko in Ibadan fainted with one of the children on her back at Oja Oba Iso Ololubo, while going to buy a bag of sachet water on credit.

The women said the widow narrated her inability to feed with her children for four days.

The traders and passersby could be seen in the video donating money for her in a small black plastic bucket and giving her youngest child a pap.

Other concerned women were observed in the video lamenting hunger in the land.

Responding to questions from one of the traders, the widow’s eldest child, a girl, speaking in Yoruba said, “We’ve not eaten for four days. My mother said all of us should come to carry water and sell, so that we can find money to eat. We were walking from home and she fell down here.”

The economic hardship worsened by hike in prices of foodstuff has deprived many households of food.

The Nigeria Labour Congress declared a two-day nationwide strike from February 27 to 28, 2024 in response to the situation.
