A Jos Upper Area Court on Monday sentenced Francis Moses, 18, to 12 months’ imprisonment for stealing iron rods worth N85,000.

The presiding judge, Daniel Damulak, sentenced Mr Moses following a guilty plea he entered for theft and trespass.

The convict begged the court for leniency and the judge gave him an option of N20,000 fine.

Prosecution counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gukwat, told the court that the case was reported at the Laranto division Police station Jos, on June 2, by Ekwedike Tochukwu.

He said the convict scaled the fence, entered Mr Tochukwu’s compound, and stole iron rods.

The police prosecutor further told the court that during the police investigation, the convict pleaded guilty to the crime.

Mr Gukwat said the offence contravenes sections 327, 271 and 272 of the Plateau Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.
