American electric car manufacturer, Tesla, has recalled more than two million after the company agreed to update its software to ensure drivers pay attention to the road when using its autopilot system following pressure from federal regulators.

The decision of federal regulators to pressure Tesla to recall its vehicles followed an investigation into the company’s autopilot programme by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which began in August 2021 after a series of accidents involving the technology.

Tesla’s autopilot system allows their car to steer, brake and accelerate vehicles on its own when on highways, with the latest recall affecting almost all of the company’s cars in the United States, including the popular Model Y sport-utility vehicle, the New York Times reported.

Despite agreeing to recall the cars, Tesla maintained the company did not agree with the agency’s assessment of the system, but federal regulators said it would continue with their investigation. The latest recall is the fourth done by the company in less than two years and the most significant one to date.

For the new update, Tesla will now add new, more prominent visual alerts and checks for the autosteer function that is part of the autopilot system.
