Threat of rain forces change in triathlon scheduled at Paralympics
The threat of rain forced a change in the schedule of the triathlon competition at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
For example, at the Olympics, the triathlon events will take place on the Seine.
During the Olympics earlier this month, the river’s water quality caused much discussion, delays, and cancellation of training sessions.
All eleven medal events will now take place on September 1 instead of on two separate days, September 1 and 2.
The ruling body, World Triathlon, said this decision was taken after a meeting with Paris 2024 organisers and the relevant French authorities to provide athletes and coaches with as much certainty as possible.
The latest weather forecast provided by Météo France indicates high uncertainty for the upcoming days, which could impact the Seine’s conditions, it stressed.
It added that the course of the swim remains unchanged.
“Contingency days for all medal events remain September 2 and 3,” the body stated.
Rainfall generally makes a river dirtier.
However, €1.4 billion ($1.5 billion) has been invested in wastewater treatment plants and the sewage system so that events could take place on the Seine.
