President Bola Tinubu on Thursday said he is “personally” ready to intervene in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) general visa ban on Nigerians.

The president said this when he received a letter of credence from the Ambassador of UAE, Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, at the State House, Abuja.

Mr Tinubu ordered the immediate resolution of the disagreements with the Emirate Airline and visa issuance.

The UAE slammed a travel ban on all Nigerians in October 2022. Authorities in the UAE have repeatedly claimed that Nigerians constitute security threats in their country.

Some Nigerians were arrested for involvement in cultism and theft in the country, and homicide rates were also said to be high and linked to Nigerians and Cameroonians.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari pleaded with the UAE government to lift the travel restriction on Nigerians. Mr Buhari appealed in a telephone conversation with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates.

Mr Buhari assured the UAE president of Nigeria’s readiness to appropriate sanctions through the judicial process against any Nigerian who commits a crime in the UAE.

The former president’s efforts were largely ignored by the UAE, which remained silent on the issue.
