In a statement on Tuesday, army spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu said the irredentist group attempted the attack on the troops on August 20 but met their waterloo when they came under the superior firepower of the vigilant troops.

According to him, items recovered at the shootout scene include one vehicle, a mobile phone, a machete, nine empty cases of expended 7.62 mm special ammunition, and one case of expended 12.7mm ammunition.

The army spokesman also said a Boko Haram fighter and his wife surrendered to the 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison troops in the Gwoza area of Borno following the aggressive combat operations against insurgents in the North-East.

He said the troops recovered one AK 47 Rifle and 10 Live rounds of 7.62 mm Special Ammunition from the surrendered terrorist.

Mr Nwachukwu said the troops of 1 Brigade Garrison operating under 8 Division in the North-West, on Monday ambushed insurgents at Bobo village in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara.

He explained that acting on actionable intelligence, the troops ambushed the insurgents on a mission to attack the village.
