Mahrez taking a penalty kick against Copenhagen

Riyad missed a first half penalty as Manchester City were held to a goalless draw by Copenhagen in the return leg of the group G fixture at Parken Stadium in Denmark on Tuesday night.

Having played every single game since the start of the season, Pep Guardiola decided to leave Erling Haaland, who has scored 20 goals in 13 appearances for Manchester City prior to this fixture.

City hit the ground from the first minute of the match, with Rodri finding the back of the net just 11 minutes into the game. However, it was disallowed by the referee for a handball by Mahrez in the build up to the goal.

Afterwards, City were awarded a penalty after Copenhagen’s player handled the ball inside the 18-yard box while Mahrez stepped up to take the penalty but his effort was saved by Kamil Grabara.

The Premier League champions’ woes were compounded as City were reduced exactly on the 30 minute time-mark – Sergio Gómez was given the marching orders after he brought down the last man outside the box.

The first half ended in a goalless draw in Denmark.

Copenhagen went toe-to-toe with visitors in the second half of the game as City were unable to find the back of the net even with 60% possession as their unbeaten run across all competitions continued.

Despite the draw, City advanced to the round of 16 phase of the competition and currently sit top of group G with 10 points from three matches with 10 goal difference.
