The United Nations Children’s Population Fund (UNICEF) has called on the Adamawa government to provide domestic financing to improve basic education in the rural communities of the state.

The UNICEF education specialist, Bauchi Field Office, Dr Abdulraham Ado, made the call on Wednesday at the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Education in Yola.

The theme for the 2024 celebration is “Learning for lasting peace.”

Mr Ado said that the domestic financing would help to ensure quality education among the vulnerable and internally displaced persons’ children in rural communities.

He also appealed to the state Universal Basic Education Board to direct head teachers to continue to implement “Teaching at the Right Level” across public schools because of its importance.

According to him, the method of teaching improves the learning process of pupils to be able to read and learn at the basic level.

Mr Ado described the theme of this year’s event as timely and expressed the need for improved synergy with security agencies to ensure a safe school and a conducive place of learning.

In a remark, the commissioner for education, Dr Garba Pella, thanked UNICEF and appreciated its contributions towards the development of education in the state.

Mr Pella said that education remains the first, second and third priority of the present administration.

He said that the government was doing everything possible to ensure quality education in the state.

Mr Pella, represented by the director of quality assurance, Mohammed Nasidi, said that the government was also striving to reduce the number of out-of-school children on the streets.

He further said that the government had planned to build more structures to accommodate the students in a conducive place for learning.

Mr Pella also said that the government alone could not do everything, hence the need for partners to contribute to a more positive impact.

UNICEF distributed learning materials to children in IDPs and vulnerable persons in selected public schools in the state as part of the celebration.
