Three-time defending champions, Super Falcons, opened their defence of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations by losing 2-1 to fierce rivals South Africa in Rabat.

The nine-time champions of the tournament returned to the women’s showpiece event for the first time since winning the third title in a row in 2018, with the 2020 edition cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jermaine Seoposenwe opened the scoring for the Bayana Bayana right on the hour mark before Hildah Magaia doubled the lead two minutes later.

Atletico Madrid’s Rasheedat Ajibade scored a consolation goal for the Falcons in added time.

It was a less than impressive game by the Falcons, with manager Randy Waldrum tasting defeat in the tournament at the first time of asking.

The Super Falcons will turn their focus to their next game against Botswana on July 7.
