World Athletics ratifies Tobi Amusan’s history-making hurdles record

Tobi Amusan overtook Kendra Harrison’s previous world record of 12.20 seconds to become the latest champion.

• September 20, 2022

The 12.12 seconds World Record set by Tobi Amusan in the Women’s 100 metre hurdles event during the 2022 World Athletics Championships has been ratified by the World Athletics.

The latest development was announced on the World Athletics’ website certifying the record set by Amusan and other World Records.

The 25-year-old hurdler ran a time of 12.12 seconds in the Women’s 100m hurdles semifinal during the World Athletics Championships held at Eugene, USA, to win the race and set a world record.

She overtook Kendra Harrison’s then world record time of 12.20 seconds when the American ran at the London Müller Anniversary Games in 2016.

The next day, Amusan again broke her own world record in the final with a time of 12.06 (2.5m/s) to win gold in the event but it couldn’t be legally recognised as a world record because it was wind-assisted.

The result now confirmed Amusan as Nigeria’s first World Record holder.

Following her recent achievements, the world champion was conferred with the national honour of as an officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and a cash reward of N4.5 million by President Muhammadu Buhari last week.
