The half-marathon world championships scheduled for Yangzhou on November 22 in China has been cancelled by World Athletics said on Tuesday.

World Athletics is the governing body for athletics, covering track and field, cross-country running, road running, wace walking, mountain running, and ultra running.

The global athletics body added that the cancellation was due to the coronavirus situation in China.

Yangzhou will now host the World Athletics Road Running Championships in March 2027.

The event’s first edition is now on September 30 and October 1, 2023, in Riga, Latvia.

For the first time next year, there will also be championship races over five kilometres in the Latvian capital, alongside the 21.1km distance.
