Having become the first Nigerian team to reach the finals of any event at World Table Tennis Contender Lagos, the duo of Omotayo Olajide and Solanke Azeez could not secure the men’s doubles title, as they were thumped by India in the final.

Indian representatives of Desai Harmeet and Thakkar Manav Vikash cruised to a clean 3-0 (8-11, 9-11, 8-11) win against the Nigerian duo to win the men’s doubles event.

Even though they could not go past the Indians, Omotayo and Solanke left a remarkable new height for the host nation in the WTT Contender Lagos history.

Meanwhile, the duo of Akula Sreeja and Kamath Archana Girish clinched the women’s doubles title after a dominating 3-0 over Chitale Diya Parag and Ghorpade Yashaswini in an all-Indian final.

Sreeja and Girish won the first set 11-9 before an easy 11-6 win in the second set, but it was close in the third set with Parag and Yashaswini cruising into an early, but the latter duo recovered to win the third set 12-10.

Speaking to Peoples Gazette after their victory, the women’s doubles champions duo of Sreeja and Girish said, “We are very happy to win this WTT title. We had a very good tournament and good matches all the way to the final too,” they said.

“We had a very good strategy for this tournament, and we also prepared well.”
