The police command in Osun says the ban on street carnival and use of fireworks during the yuletide is still in force in the state.

A statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, on Tuesday in Osogbo, said that the measure was to ensure serene environment across the state.

“Members of the public are therefore warned to desist from selling, buying and making use of these items, especially during this yuletide season,” she added.

She said, “These class of low explosive pyrotechnic devices/fireworks pose risks of causing injury to people and damage to property.”

Ms Opalola added that the fireworks could also cause distraction and pose a threat to the security of members of the public.

“Street carnival will not be tolerated in whatever form or guise.

“Therefore, all organisers of carnivals are enjoined to hire halls or use gated compounds to carry out or celebrate their festival,” the spokesperson said.

According to her, the measure is to prevent miscreants and hoodlums from capitalising on the yuletide celebrations to carry out their nefarious activities.

Ms Opalola, therefore, admonished parents, guardians, religious leaders and ward heads to monitor their children and followers and ensure strict adherence to the ban.

She warned that violators would be apprehended and prosecuted.
