Zamfara reaffirms commitment to tackle GBV

The Zamfara government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating gender-based violence through sustained support for the Huriyya Dauda Lawal Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Gusau.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday.
The statement said the commissioner for women affairs, children and social development, Aisha Anka, gave the assurance during a visit by a UNICEF delegation led by Sarah to assess operations.
Ms Anka said the centre provided 24-hour comprehensive services, including medical care, psychosocial counselling, and case management, adding that services were free, confidential, and included follow-up support for survivors.
She said the state government collaborated with security agencies, the judiciary, and community leaders to curb GBV and ensure perpetrators were held accountable under existing laws.
The commissioner attributed the rising cases of GBV in northwestern states to insecurity and social disruptions, assuring that the government would intensify efforts to address the challenge.
She also emphasised the need for community awareness, timely reporting of cases, and strengthened institutional response to protect vulnerable women and children across the state.
The UNICEF delegation pledged continued partnership with the state government to strengthen service delivery, technical capacity, and survivor support systems at the centre.
