39.
POLICEMAN A (CONT'D)
I know you two are hardworking and
law-abiding people. He is also a
gentle person. Now that this is
happening, I can help, even though
it won't be easy since it involves
so many people.
Like a drowning person grasping at a lifebuoy, the mother speaks
hastily.
THE AMERASIAN'S MOTHER
So, you can help us? How much money
will it take? I will do my best.
POLICEMAN A
This is a difficult matter. It may
take four, five, maybe seven bars
of gold, or perhaps more, I don't
know yet. But I will do my best.
The woman appears dejected.
THE AMERASIAN'S MOTHER
That's a lot. I don't see how I can
put up that much.
POLICEMAN A
That's your problem. But both of
you are going to America, and there
are probably many over there who
want to help you.
She holds her head in her hands, turns to her son, and starts sobbing.
THE AMERASIAN'S MOTHER
You are causing me so much pain. I
don't know what to do now.
