35 INT. THE AMERASIAN'S HOME – EVENING
THE AMERASIAN returns home, bandages his wounds, and is chatting
with his mother when someone knocks at the door. It is POLICEMAN
the officer in charge of the neighborhood where they reside.
POLICEMAN A is wearing his uniform and looks commanding. The
mother invites POLICEMAN A to come in. He sits in a chair, leans
backs, looks at the mother, and then the son attentively with his small
but piercing eyes. He then affects a half-smile and speaks.
POLICEMAN A
So, what is up with you two? Why do
you look so tired and worried?
Shouldn't you be upbeat now that
you are going to America?
Amerasian's mother manages to crack a smile.
THE AMERASIAN'S
tired
It's nothing. I am a little
and sick these days. I seem to be
always sick, what a nuisance.
Policeman A nods.
POLICEMAN A
Right. This kind of weather makes
people sick, but a sickness in the
head is more worrisome because it
can cause people to crumble very
quickly. Don't you agree? Perhaps I
can help?
The woman sees that Policeman A's attitude presages nothing good,
but isn't quite sure what he knows or wants. That makes her a little
nervous.
