Solar electric: The SolarNet deal

Solar panels

"Solar power is destined to power the next century...Clean, inexhaustible, universally available, this technology is the next century's equivalent of the microchip."
The Guardian

Despite our rainy climate the UK has the capacity to supply 2/3 of our electricity needs through solar electric panels alone. Solarising your home is one way you can become your own electricity producer and help to protect our world from the devastating effects of climate change. As well as the environmental benefits, solar power is an opportunity for the UK to capture a share of the jobs and money in the expanding solar panel industry.

But solar has been held back by the unfair price that solar householders have been offered for the electricity they generate.

Greenpeace and Eastern Energy launch the SolarNet deal

Until now solar householders who export their surplus of solar electricity have typically been offered only one third the price that they are charged for electricity supplied from the grid. Now, thanks to a deal brokered by Greenpeace with a power company TXU- Europe (Eastern Energy) UK householders will now be offered a fair and equal price for the electricity they generate.

Under this newly launched 'net metering' scheme called 'SolarNet' solar electric householders will get the same price per unit (kWh) as the electricity they import from the grid. This deal is a big step forward for solar power in the UK and puts an end to the solar 'daylight robbery' scandal.
