Authors: how you can help the Book Campaign

Last edited 25 July 2007 at 11:33am

The aim of the Book Campaign is to persuade book publishers to introduce paper procurement policies which commit the company to only using ancient forest friendly paper - that is, paper that has a high recycled content with any virgin wood pulp it contains certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

To achieve this, we're asking British authors to encourage their publishers to print their books on ancient forest friendly paper, and the list of our supporters reads like The Sunday Times bestseller list.

Andy McNab, Anne Fine, Ben Elton, Charlotte Bingham, Helen Fielding, Michael Morpurgo, Ian Rankin, JK Rowling, John King, John O'Farrell, Maggie O'Farrell, Mark Lynas, Penny Vincenzi, Philip Pullman and William Sutcliffe are just some of the authors working with us to ensure their future editions are not being printed at the expense of ancient forests.

As a result of the campaign, over 40 per cent of the UK's book publishers have introduced green policies, including Random House, Harper Collins, Penguin, Bloomsbury and Egmont. Meanwhile, Hachette - the UK's largest publishing house and owner of Hodder Headline, Orion, Little Brown and Octopus - is failing to any make progress.

These authors are now part of a network of over 200 who are supporting the campaign worldwide but we are keen to recruit more.

What can you do?

  • If you haven't already done so, please write to your publisher and request that your next book is printed on ancient forest friendly (recycled and/or FSC certified) paper. It would be extremely helpful if you could send us a copy of your letter and any response you receive.
  • Encourage other authors to sign up in support of the campaign. They can do this by downloading and filling out the author's pledge.
