Lapeyre

Lapeyre are Europe's largest retailer of Amazon timber, with 114 European outlets. The company also owns Eldorado, a major timber export company in Para State in the Brazilian Amazon. Nearly half of their timber suppliers have been fined for illegalities. Lapeyre also buys from ancient forests under threat in Cameroon, Gabon, Southeast Asia and British Columbia (Canada).

Lapeyre belongs to a group of companies owned by the French industrial group Saint Gobain, the same company which now owns Jewson's stores in the UK. Jewson's have committed to buying 80% of their timber by 2003 only from independently certified sources, according to standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Lapeyre have not made any similar commitment and continue to buy from ancient forest destruction.

At their AGM in May Greenpeace released their own version of Lapeyre's catalogue and website at www.lapeyre.org/destruction. Log on and join the thousands of viewers who have already surfed through Lapeyre' catalogue of ancient forest destruction.
