Greenpeace - campaigning against toxic toys

Greenpeace today welcomed the growing activities by various governmental bodies in the European Union against environmental pollution caused by polyvinyl chloride (PVC). "Within only one week we have seen three official initiatives on PVC which highlight the environmental hazards caused by PVC plastic" said Axel Singhofen from Greenpeace.

These initiatives include: - The release of a sustainability report by the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) which recommends the phase-out of soft PVC (1); - The release of the second environmental assessment report by the European Environmental Agency (EEA) which lists various environmental problems of PVC (2); - The order of the Italian government to close a major PVC factory near Venice, due to the release of highly toxic vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), the building stone for PVC (3).
