Wednesday's proceedings started with more witnesses for the prosecution. The first was Mr Howard Stringer, Technical Manager, Baileys International (Steeplejack company).

Mr Stringer explained that his company had been asked to carry out an inspection of the chimney and to provide a costing for the work required.

The costings covered two distinct areas - general damage and paint damage. Mr Stringer agreed that it was impossible to say when the general damage had occurred.

Mr Stringer said that his company had made an attempt to remove the paint but was unable to, so a decision was made to paint the damage out - extending five metres down beyond the original smoke band.
