Commenting on media reports this morning that officials at the Department for Energy and Climate Change are considering announcing a plan to phase out coal by 2023 ahead of the Paris climate summit, Greenpeace UK head of energy Daisy Sands said:

"If it's true that ministers are seriously considering phasing out dirty coal by 2023, this would be a major blow to the coal industry ahead of crucial climate talks in Paris. World leaders need to know that a coal phase-out in a major nation is possible. What we need now is a firm pledge by David Cameron to replace coal with truly clean energy. With both fracking and new nuclear mired in controversy, the last thing the government should be doing is putting the brakes on the clean technologies that are getting cheaper and more efficient every year. Wind and solar are our best bet to clean up the energy system whilst creating jobs and keeping future costs down. If ministers are serious about putting consumers first, they should give these technologies their full backing."
